With the holidays just around the corner, gift-giving and holiday parties will be gobbling up most of our paychecks. But who says you need to charge everything on the card to have a good time? From breweries to museums, state parks to light shows, here are a few of my favorite free attractions in Missouri.

  1. Visit the Liberty Memorial.

Greg Zenitsky/flickr Though you do have to pay a fee for the World War I Museum, you can still check out the outdoor memorial for free. As a bonus, this is one of the best places to catch a glimpse of the beautiful Kansas City skyline. Feel free to take some Instagram-worthy photos while you’re there.

Address: 2 Memorial Dr. Kansas City, MO 64108

  1. Hang out with the animals at the zoo.

Saint Louis Zoo/Facebook Entry into the St. Louis Zoo is free and guests can expect to see up to 5,000 animals from 700 different species.

Address: 1 Government Dr. St. Louis, MO 63110

  1. Hike and swim at Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park.

Vanessa Righeimer/Only In Missouri Take a dip into the crystal clear waters on a hot day or enjoy an easy hike on a crisp, fall day at this majestic state park.

Address: 148 Taum Sauk Trail Middle Brook, MO 63656

  1. Watch the Branson Landing light show

Branson Convention and Visitors Bureau/flickr This $7.5 million spectacular water attraction features the first-ever merging of water, fire, light and music. The performances take place everyday starting at noon.

Address: 100 Branson Landing Blvd. Branson, MO 65616

  1. Spend a day exploring Forest Park.

Jon Dickson/flickr While Forest Park may be a familiar attraction to St. Louis residents, I don’t think it’s given enough credit regionally. This stunning park is actually larger than Central Park In New York City, and in my opinion, way better.

Address: 5595 Grand Dr. St. Louis, MO 63112

  1. Take a tour of the Boulevard Brewing Company.

Boulevard Brewing Company/Facebook Tours at the Boulevard Brewing Company are free, but you have to reserve a ticket at the brewery beforehand. It’s first come, first served, so make sure you get there early before it fills up.

Address: 2501 Southwest Blvd. Kansas City, MO 64108

  1. Look at world-class art at the Saint Louis Art Museum.

Saint Louis Art Museum/Facebook This world-renowned art museum constantly updates its exhibits, so you’ll never get bored. With the amount of high-praised art submissions the museum receives, it should be a crime that this place is free! But hey, I’m more than okay with that.

Address:

1 Fine Arts Dr. St. Louis, MO 63110

  1. Tantalize your taste buds with a free wine tasting.

scott P./Yelp Wine tastings are free at Pirtle Winery in Weston. However, I can’t promise that you won’t want to buy a whole glass or bottle after you fall in love with one of their flavors.

Address: 502 Spring St. Weston, MO 64098
