Minnesota is definitely known for having its own culture; from the creative cities, to the corporate suburbs, to the rural hometowns, you’ll find an amazing array of personalities and stories when you get to know the citizens of our state. And some of us really are guilty of fitting a stereotype or two. Here are a few of the types of MN personalities you might come-across, and while most of us a are a mix of a few of these, there’s usually one we identify with the most. So take a look, and share which personality you might have on the Only In Minnesota Facebook Page.

  1. The Outdoorsman (woman)

Flickr/Robert Engberg You fully take advantage of all 4 MN seasons and are always outside. You’re always on a hike, canoe trip, hunting, skiing or really doing anything outside. And you sometimes dress like Paul Bunyan.

  1. The Suburban Super-Parent

Flickr/St. George’s School You are the hockey, soccer, basketball mom (or dad) extraordinaire (and maybe occasionally over-competitive). You live for your family and you are the perpetual coach and cheerleader of everyone you care about. You somehow manage to fit a million things into a day when the rest of us aren’t even getting off the couch.

  1. The Weekend Warrior

Flickr/DiamondBack Truck Covers Sure you have a great day job with a good company, but come 4pm on Friday afternoon and you’re ready and packed for another weekend adventure. Your cabin is your first home, not your second, and you’d rather have more 4-wheelers and snowmobiles than go on that European vacation.

  1. The Small-Towner

Flickr/Ken Ratcliff You like the phrase “born and raised” and you live for the small town life. You know all your neighbors and can be considered a regular at local businesses. You’re also extremely proud of that one big statue or famous person from your town.

  1. The Old-Timer

Flickr/Randen Pederson You love reminiscing about the old days in MN with anyone who will listen. You’ve lived here forever and sometimes complain because you want people to stop moving here. You love this state and you’d never leave.

  1. The Corporate Climber

Flickr/Joe Bielawa Whether you moved here for a job or grew up in MN, you’re a 24-7 worker. You’re often found running through the city skyways or sitting in rush hour traffic throughout the metro. You’re a little fish in a big ocean but you’ll reach the top someday!

  1. The Downtown Hipster

Flickr/Joel Bedford You cherish the Twin Cities lifestyle from the arts to the theater and love living in walking distance of the skyways. You’re stylish and plugged into everything cool and new and will probably never leave the city, from fear you’ll miss out on all that culture.

  1. The Uptown Hipster

Facebook/LynLake Brewery You’re super laid back and love all things local from beers to coffee shops to clothing. You might consider yourself a foodie, and you’re the master of casual, effortless style.

  1. The Farmer

Flickr/U.S. Department of Agriculture You’re the most hard-working person around, and cherish the farming lifestyle and all it stands for. You know more about the land in Minnesota than any of those Twin Cities people and you’re proud to support yourself and your family like generations before you have - through an honest days work.

  1. The Health Nut

Flickr/USFWSmidwest You’re all about healthy living, from the food you eat (and the juice you drink) to your daily walks and yoga classes. You enjoy the occasional indulgence, but you’re all about that organic, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, or vegan life.

  1. The Snow Seeker

Flickr/Kyle Taylor You sought out Minnesota for its low temps and winter recreation. You love all things winter and even though everyone else thinks you’re crazy, you’ve found your niche here.

  1. The Fair Weather Fan (Snowbird)

Flickr/tux0racer Sure the summer is grand, but come first snow and you’re packed up and off to warmer climates. You hate the MN winter but you just can’t let go of the family, friends, and culture enough to commit to a full move.

  1. The Medical Mover

Flickr/cursedthing Whether you’re here as a patient, with a patient, or to further your medical career, you chose MN (most likely Rochester) for its medical prowess and, while you don’t like the winter, you put up with it for the world-renowned research quality.

  1. The Transplant

Flickr/Russell Harrison Photography You moved for a job or for school and spend most of your time wondering how the culture in MN can be so different from the other states. You even had to read a book about it. You’re a member of 15 meet-up groups and complain about how hard it is to make friends with everyone else because they’ve all known each other since high school. But if you stick it out, you just might become…

  1. The Loyal Minnesotan

Flickr/Joe Bielawa Fan of all home-teams, and always up for some traditional MN fun, you LOVE your state and will defend it to the ends of the earth regardless of how freezing it really is or how your team never wins. You’ve got a comeback for everything and your worst nightmare is to be mistaken for someone from Wisconsin or Iowa.

Hopefully, we’ve all got a touch of The Loyal Minnesotan in us, and a lot of us are more than one of these people. Minnesota has a truly unique culture and regardless of personality, we’re all just happy to be a part of it!
