Burgers. They’re one of the main food groups here in Texas, along with barbecue, Tex-Mex, and anything fried. But which ones are worth the precious money and calories? That’s exactly what you’re about to find out. Although we’ve written a few similar articles, we just keep uncovering new places that force us to do follow-up pieces. Here are some of the best ones, along with a few repeats that are just too delicious to pass up mentioning again.
- No. 5 Special at Keller’s Drive-In (Dallas)
Yelp/Bill B.
Yelp/Amy D. Old-fashioned drive-ins are hard to find these days, so Keller’s is a true gem. You’ll see everything from motorcycle gangs to classic cars to average Joes enjoying a burger. This one is double meat and cheese, lettuce, tomato, and special sauce all sandwiched between their famous poppyseed bun.
- Cheeseburger at Jucys Hamburgers (Longview, Marshall, and Tyler)
Facebook/JucysHamburgers
Facebook/JucysHamburgers Highway 80 in Longview is home to the original Jucys and has been for 36 years. It’s been voted the best burger in East Texas for over 25 years and even the number one in the entire state by Texas Highways Magazine. There’s just something about a Jucys Cheeseburger that’s unmatched by any other burger in Texas.
- Double Meat Cheeseburger at Dave’s Burger Barn (Waco)
Yelp/Todd M.
Yelp/Allen W. This one’s for y’all, dear readers. So many of you said we should’ve included Dave’s in our previous burger articles, so we had to see what all the hype was about - and it definitely lived up to our expectations. If you’re feeling brave enough, you can take on the famous Zipper Ripper challenge, which is a massive burger with five patties, five slices of cheese, five slices of bacon, and a pound of fries. For us normal people, a couple of patties will hit the spot just fine. Don’t worry, this burger is still Texas-sized.
- Bacon Cheeseburger at Mary’s Cafe (Strawn)
Yelp/Glenn S.
Yelp/David C. I know I always mention the CFS at Mary’s, but their burgers are pretty darn tasty as well. Be forewarned, though - you better come hungry or prepared to bring home some leftovers! The patty itself is two pounds without even counting the toppings or bun. But even if your eyes are bigger than your stomach, you’ll find it hard to stop eating. There’s something irresistible about a big, juicy, home-cooked Southern burger.
- Double Meat Bacon Cheeseburger at Spurlock’s Malt Shop (Anna)
Yelp/Spurlock’s Malt Shop
Yelp/Spurlock’s Malt Shop Spurlock’s has been around since 1951 making the Dallas area a better place with its burgers and shakes. Not much has changed over the years, so visiting the restaurant is definitely a blast from the past. The quality has remained the same, as well. They execute the classic combination of tender beef, crispy bacon, and melty cheese perfectly for a burger your taste buds will never forget.
- Mushroom Swiss Burger at Hamburger Depot (Beaumont)
Yelp/Alan D.
Yelp/Hamburger Depot I might be biased since I’m from Beaumont, but Hamburger Depot serves up some of the best burgers I’ve ever had. They’re huge, juicy, tender, and the flavors just mesh together perfectly. Plus, the sides - onion rings, curly fries, sweet potato fries,
- Double BBQ Burger at Tookie’s (Seabrook)
Yelp/Na S.
tookiesburgers.com Tookie’s is a classic that’s been making best burger lists in Texas for years. This is one of their best menu items in my opinion - two patties marinated in barbecue sauce with onions and a whole pile of other good stuff.
- The Big Tex at Twisted Root Burger Co (Various locations)
Yelp/Twisted Root Burger Co
Yelp/Twisted Root Burger Co This modern, eclectic burger joint has several locations across Texas, so there’s bound to be one close enough to you to make a trip to one weekend - and if not, then I guess it’s time for a road trip! It’s just THAT good, y’all. This burger has fried onion strings, guacamole, cheddar cheese, and chipotle sauce. Everything a Texan needs, right?
- Cheeseburger at Boot’s Burgers (Rockwall)
Yelp/Steve W.
Yelp/Randy O. A reader on a previous burger article called Boots the “best kept secret in Texas.” That statement couldn’t hold any more truth considering it’s a tiny little shack with a walk-up window. You’re sure to miss it if you aren’t looking for it! But when you do find it, boy, is it a diamond in the rough. Burgers are the only menu item here, so you know they put all their time and energy into making them as delicious as possible - not to mention they don’t have to waste any effort keeping up a fancy atmosphere. So folks, get yourself over to Boots ASAP. And don’t forget the jalapeño relish!
- Stuffed Burger at Nicky D’s (Crowley)
Yelp/Tom G.
Yelp/Jimmie H. Nicky D’s is another reader favorite, and admittedly one I’d never heard of before I read the comments on a previous article. I was sure missing out, though. The patty itself of this burger is stuffed with cheese, jalapenos, and onions. Does it get any better than that?
- Hell Burger at Coyote Bluff Cafe (Amarillo)
Yelp/Carolynne M.
Yelp/Lorne G.
Yelp/Megan P. This little chuckwagon knows how to serve up a good burger. It was featured on Man Vs. Food, so you know it has to be something pretty special. We Texans like our food smokin’ hot, so I highly recommend the Hell Burger, which has sauteed jalapeños AND Coyote Hell sauce. Don’t ask me what’s in it because I don’t know, but just know it’ll set your mouth on fire in the best way possible. Oh, and don’t forget to order a massive plate of cheese fries on the side.
Have you been to any of these restaurants? Which one is your favorite? Are there any amazing burger joints in Texas that we left off?
