Ghosts seem to love calling Nevada home. There are stories of ghostly hauntings from all around the state. Hotels, bars, parks … these ghosts don’t discriminate. All sorts of places are perfect for a little Nevada ghost spotting.
Now, I’m not talking about seeing Slimer and his trail of green sticky goo. I’m talking about the apparitions of real people from throughout Nevada’s history, often with tragic and heartbreaking tales, according to those who have spotted them.
If you feel like doing some Nevada ghost spotting, check out any of the following 13 locations, all which are allegedly haunted according to these ghost stories:
- Goldfield Hotel – Goldfield
Flickr / Roadsidepictures Ghost: Elizabeth, a prostitute Reason For Haunting: Elizabeth was allegedly impregnated by the hotel’s owner George Wingfield. Worried about a scandal negatively affecting his business affairs, he chained Elizabeth to a radiator in Room 109 and left her there until her baby was born. Elizabeth died after giving birth and the baby was thrown down a mine shaft. Spotted: Many guests have reported seeing an apparition of a sad Elizabeth in a white gown, often in Room 109.
- Mizpah Hotel – Tonopah
Flickr / Don Barrett Ghost: “Lady In Red,” the Mizpah Hotel’s most famous prostitute Reason For Haunting: She was beaten and strangled to death at the hotel by a jealous ex-boyfriend. Spotted: Many guests have reported seeing her spirit in Room 504 and on the fifth floor hallway. She is known to touch men’s hair or rub up against them.
- Whiskey Pete’s Hotel and Casino – Jean
Wikimedia/unidyne Ghost: Whiskey Pete, a former miner and moonshiner who owned a nearby gas station Reason For Haunting: To watch over the casino. Spotted: Guests say he is mysteriously filling up their parked cars with gas. Is it just me, or does Whiskey Pete sound awesome? Hey Pete, I drive a white RAV-4.
- The Nevada Governor’s Mansion – Carson City

Dickerson, his wife Una Dickerson and their child, June Reason For Haunting: They enjoyed their time in the Governor’s Mansion so much, they don’t want to leave. Can you blame them? Spotted: Staff and overnight guests have reported the entity of a woman wearing a long white dress and an apparition of a young girl, wandering around the second floor and hallways. Male footsteps have been heard going up the stairs. There’s an unexpected cold breeze in front of the grandfather clock on the first floor. Supposedly, doors in the parlor open by themselves.
- The Abraham Curry House – Carson City
Wikimedia/Aaron A. Gallup Ghost: Abraham Curry, the founder of Carson City Reason For Haunting: He died suddenly of a stroke in 1873, so he wants to check in on his family and make sure they are ok. Spotted: Many people have spotted Curry’s apparition.
- Unsanctioned Boulder City Pet Cemetery – Desert between Boulder City and Searchlight
Flickr / Miss Sheri Ghost: A white cat Reason For Haunting: He doesn’t know how to count and thinks he still has one of his nine lives left? Spotted: The friendly feline will follow you around the cemetery at night, but only if he likes you.
- Gold Hill Hotel & Saloon - Gold Hill
Flickr / Brent Cooper Ghost: A Miner named William and a prostitute named Rosie Reason For Haunting: William was said to be one of the 47 miners who died in the Yellowjacket Mine fire behind the hotel. Rosie apparently really likes Room 4, so she moved in. Spotted: These practical jokers reportedly hang out in the great room. William lives in Room 5 and Rosie in Room 4. William locks people out of their rooms and Rosie turns lights on and off or moves guests’ belongings around.
- Old Washoe Club – Virginia City
Flickr / Nick Ares Ghost: Lena, a blonde prostitute and her male killer; a 13-year old girl Reason For Haunting: Lena was murdered in a third-floor bedroom. Her killer committed suicide on the second floor; the young girl was murdered in the basement Spotted: Lena has been seen on the spiral staircase. The apparition of her killer and the young girl have also been reported.
- Silver Queen Hotel – Virginia City
Flickr / NickAres Ghost: Rosie, a prostitute Reason For Haunting: She is said to have slit her wrists in the bathtub of Room 11. Spotted: She has been spotted wandering around the hotel, tapping on doors and scaring guests. One guest said she felt someone chasing her down the hallway when she walked toward Room 11.
- Mackay Mansion – Virginia City
Flickr / Tom Hilton Ghost: A little girl dressed in white Reason For Haunting: Unknown, but many children in frontier times died from disease or accidents. Spotted: Several people (including actor Johnny Depp) say she has visited them in their room. Apparently, even ghosts can be fangirls. Others have even reported hearing the little girl playing upstairs.
- Fox Ridge Park - Henderson
Yelp / Micah L. Ghost: An angry little boy Reason For Haunting: The child was either hit by a drunk driver or hit when he accidentally ran in front of an oncoming car. Spotted: The boy is said to sit on a swing. He is not to be bothered. If you look at him he will turn into a demon and disappear.
- Las Vegas Academy’s Lowden Theater for the Performing Arts – Las Vegas

Wikimedia / Stan Shebs Ghost: Actress Carole Lombard Reason For Haunting: Her beloved Clark Gable waited at the bar for news in 1942 as a search crew looked for Lombard’s the missing plane. The wreckage of the plane was found on Mount Potosi, outside of town, and Lombard didn’t survive. Spotted: An apparition of Lombard looking to console Gable. Talk about undying love.
