It has come to my attention that the show, The Walking Dead, that has taken a lot of people by storm. Being the “person who lives under a gigantic rock” I have to sadly admit that I have not seen it however. I can tell you that my children know all about it and think I’m pretty lame. They also just had tell me ALL about the show and what it covered (including all the gore…I have a 13-year-old boy – enough said.) That got me to thinking about the specifics if something like that were to happen. Mind you, I have a HUGE imagination (so much so that I scare myself at times – another sad truth).
Therefore, I give to you my entirely insane and purely entertaining list of places to hide in South Carolina if the zombie apocalypse showed up on our doorstep!
- The Fireproof Building designed by Robert Mills in 1822.
Spencer Means/Flickr The fact that it’s still standing and is still fireproof says something about this place. It’s strong for one, and even though there are windows I can promise you it would take more than an act of Congress to break that glass.
Pros: It is fireproof and very large therefore you can store loads of food and a few extra people can come with you without you wanting to bite their heads off. Cons: You are pretty much stuck here. It’s in a city which means there may be a lot of zombies congregating here.
- Any one of South Carolina’s barrier islands.

Most of them you have to get to by boat which means they may not be accessible to zombies. Unfortunately, some of them are inhabited and you’ll have to be careful to make sure that none of them have come into contact with zombies.
Pros: The islands are isolated. There will be food there and few people. Cons: There are people inhabiting some of the islands. You’ll need a boat to get access.

PROrjcox/Flickr In my opinion, this would be the coolest place to hide out from the fallout. There’s a lookout for you to walk and make sure you see what’s coming your way, there are cannons that still work, and a lot of space for other people you might like to bring along.
Pros: It’s isolated and you need a boat to get to it. There’s a lot of coverage and you’re able to see what’s coming at you from all sides. There’s a lot of space available for extra people. Cons: It is possible that you may run out of food. And again, you need a boat to reach it.

It’s true that it’s isolated and I can see where that would be a great thing, but this castle is not really in that great of shape anymore. However, if you have a million zombies after you, I don’t think that looks should come into consideration. Your life is at stake, man!
Pros: It’s off the mainland so it’ll be hard for the undead to come after you unless they learn to swim (let’s hope not!). It’s a large space with a great start for something that could be a place to stay for a while. Cons: It’s old and you never know what might take a chunk out of it and it’s not well-equipped as it has been let go over the years.
- Parsons Mountain Fire Tower in Abbeville
Parsons Mountain Fire Tower/FB At the summit of Parsons Mountain in Abbeville there’s a fire tower. I have some doubts about this for a long stay, but I think for an overnight stay or maybe a two-day rest, this would be ideal. It’s a good way of seeing what’s coming at you way before they see you and there might be a way to block off the bottom of it so the zombies can’t climb the stairs. Can zombies climb stairs?
Pros: It’s high in the air and will be great for you to take a rest for a couple of days. Cons: It’s small and I don’t think it would be a great place for a long stay.
- Lighthouses
Frank DiBona/Flickr South Carolina has quite a few lighthouses. Some of them are on islands and some of them are easily accessible by foot. The last kind are a great thing! What if along with the zombie apocalypse everything else starts malfunctioning as well? Anyway, I believe lighthouses would be a great place to lay low while you figure out what’s going on.
Pros: Small windows, small front door so it’s easy to barricade, and you can use the top for a lookout. Cons: You could possibly run out of supplies before you find a cure for the zombies. There’s always a trade off…geesh! There are a lot of stairs…is there an elevator?
- Fort Fremont on St. Helena Island
Fort Fremont/FB This place is pretty well hidden now as nature seems to be covering it and trying to take it over again. There’s a lot of space inside (underground) and it’s made of rock solid stuff.
Pros: It would take more than zombies to get into this place and there are places to put in 10" disappearing guns! Cons: It’s a tad isolated. Food may be scarce. Take others with you for help.

Mikel Manitius/Flickr It’s always a good idea in case of a zombie apocalypse to get out of any city as fast as you can, but if you can’t than this is a pretty good alternative. The State House has survived wars, surely it can survive zombie attack! Plus, think of all that lovely space you have to roam around and store supplies.
Pros: It’s made of sturdy stuff. There’s a lot of room for supplies. Cons: It’s in the middle of a city.

Jasperdo/Flickr This fort is on Sullivan’s Island therefore, it would be difficult for zombies to follow you…hopefully. It’s a stronghold which is hard to see from above if you painted it olive green. Can zombies see color? Anyway, there’s a lot of room here to store supplies and bring a few people without getting overcrowded.
Pros: You could stay here for a while. Lots of room for supplies and extra people. Cons: I don’t think there’s one unless it can flood from a potential hurricane or tidal wave.
- Capitol Building
geraldbrazell/Flickr Again, I know that they really want you to get out of the city if things hit the fan with those zombies, but what if you can’t? I mean what if you were the last person and you woke up from a coma and had nowhere else to go in a hurry? Well, if you were in Columbia, you could take over the Capitol Building. It’s the tallest building in South Carolina so there’s that advantage.
Pros: It’s the tallest building in South Carolina. Lots of room for other people just in case and for stocking supplies. Cons: You’re in the middle of a city with zombies around every corner. The building may have people in there who you don’t like. (P.S. You could give them to the zombies!)
